Super Heroes for a Super (Final) Year!

Super heroes are such fun for school! Students can start off the year imagining themselves accomplishing all sorts of amazing feats! I love the idea of having the ability to be your own super hero. Sometimes it just takes the right idea and the determination to follow through on your dreams. I can see some of my kiddos from last year’s class being super heroes and taking on causes to make the world a better place. I am hopeful for this, my final class, to be inspired as well to bring hope and kindness to our community and world. Yes, this is it. The final countdown. After 42 years of fourth grade, I will finally be retiring after this school year. It has been rather sad sorting through all my many posters, activities, games, worksheets, and so much STUFF. I remember the fun times, the awesome activities, and the ones that were not so awesome because they were way too complicated or just plain, um, dumb. I have already passed on so many things to fellow teachers, yet my room is still so full of, yea, stuff! It is amazing what one can accumulate in 42 years! Wow! Sorting through it has brought back some great memories and given me some ideas for this year. There are so many handmade letters, bulletin boards, worksheets, decorations – all those things that are either made on the computer now or purchased online. The sad thing is, most of it will go in the trash. No one wants handmade items anymore. So, I will pass on all my units of study – parts of speech, writing, reading ideas, social studies ideas – with the hope that the new teacher will at least look at some of the long gathered information before disposing of it.

Even so, I am extremely excited about this, my last school year. So many super ideas have come to me as I cleaned everything out, and I can’t wait to explore all these interesting projects! I found so many prizes in the back of my cupboard that there will be some sweet prize choices each quarter for students to purchase with their tickets. (Students collect tickets throughout the day for positive behavior, participation, achievement, etc.) So here’s to a wonderful, exciting, last year of fourth grade!
